Hi Chris -
I just did this job on my '97 900 this past weekend. I ended up using a universal at the socket and then a few long extensions (as mentioned by Anders) to get to the inner bolts. It helped to have another person get the socket onto the bolts and support it while I torqued the bolts on/off.
When I say long extension I mean long enough to get almost halfway across the engine.
All in all, it was not a bad job and took maybe an hour, including the head scratching trying to decide how best to get at the inside bolts.
