The way I do it is to loosen the nut to be level with the threaded part of the ball joint. I then put a flat chisel wedged in between the level nut and the axle shaft and drive it in with a little pressure then I strike the spindle with a hammer and it pops free. Then when I have trouble putting the nut back on because the threaded part with the ball in the control arm is turning I use a bottle jack to put some slight up pressure on the control arm to pressure engage the taper part of the shaft into the spindle and it will allow the self locking nut to thread on without the shaft spinning.
