Water Pump Test?

I have read about it but never experienced the bearing failure in the water pump that causes the pulley to eat into the timing cover. I had this happen on a 30K mile Bosch water pump (that brand is off the list after this). Luckily it did not go through the cover. After replacing it I have thought about making a test feeler gauge to use to check the clearance between the pump and timing cover each oil change. I want to use the thickest flat stock I can insert while the pump is new. I thought is I removed the air filter housing and parked the tensioner retracted to be able to slide the belt a little on the water pump this test could be done. The thoughts of replacing the timing cover makes me want to do this. Has anyone done this type of test and does the bearing fail all at ones or gradually to get the pulley to the timing cover. Thanks for any advice.
