You can bet car companies that scrimp on a $5 knowing full well a few people would die, would not include a part that does nothing! I have a few guesses of why we have these 'shields':
- they shield the rotor from water to make braking more consistent in all types of weather, especially when running through a puddle
- they shield the rotor and all brake hardware from dirt, foreign bits, and salt spray (in the snowbelt areas). Have you ever seen how many rocks and stuff gets trapped on suspension parts?
- they shield the suspension parts from radiant heat given off by the rotors. The rubber on CV boots and ball joints in particular could be at risk...probably Ok if the car is constantly moving but in quick stops for a red light where the car sits, I'm not so sure. Over time I'm sure it would have an impact on these components.
The rotors and calipers are pretTynwell protected by the wheel except for the back side which is quote exposed be it not for the shield. I'd keep them on!
