It would help you if you understand the intricacies of the ignition switch and lock cylinder and the piece in between.
It is three main parts involved and it is only the electrical switch in the bottom that can deliver power to different users. The lock tumbler and center section is only mechanical devices that allows the electrical switch to pop up.
You can clean the lock tumbler to hell and back but if the center section or ignition switch are sticky or worn out, nothing will help until you clean or replace those.
The center section plays a vital role in the gear lock out and pop up function is also completely different between and automatic and stick shift.
I have seen the center section being worn on a few cars where it was a hit and miss if it popped up or not and if it doesn't pop up, it will not allow the ignition switch to pop up either and not turning off power to radio and such.
The center section is also a very expensive part around $370.00 for both auto and stick and may not even be available anymore so the best would be to find a used complete shifter housing if you want to go that route.
