Take for instance the Volvo white engines from 92 and up.
For many years, the oil pump pickup screen o-ring went bad and since the o-ring is above the oil level, the pump started to get more and more amount of air sucked into the oil stream.
The quick and early signs of that happening was to run the car warm and let it sit idling for a few minutes. If the lifters started to tick and then became quite again with a quick test drive around the block, it was a pretty sure sign of bad oil pickup o-ring.
Lifters/tappets are furthest away from the oil pressure source and tells you the quickest if you are low on oil or oil pressure.
