The common ball joint separator, like the OEM style you'd find at auto zone or amazon, won't fit. That Harbor Freight "thumb" has a bit of a taper though, maybe it can get between the CVJ and nut (be sure to loosen the nut to the top of the bolt threads no matter what you use).
However, there's a couple workarounds.
One is to unbolt the control arm where it connects to the subframe so you can tilt the strut out of the way and pull the axle out of the hub. (This per Dmitry, i'll post a link to his outer CV boot repair instructions. Very helpful site for a number of jobs, with pics).
Another is posted here, and how I've done it using a chisel between the CV Joint and the the ball joint nut, after loosening the nut so it clears the bolt, protecting the bolt and threads. Search this board for "The easy way to separate the front ball joint." This one takes a bit of patience. The downward pressure from the wedged chisel plus just the whack with a small sledge will pop it out.
