I'll post a link to Dean's suggested method, see step 7. I've done it this way and it does eliminate the need for removing the lower hose and can reduce the mess but its also time consuming and probably requires one or two additional flushes to get everything, compared to draining at the lower hose. Edit: Yes, you need some type of pump. I got a fluid pump from amazon I think.
I've never removed the bumper of my Viggen to get to the lower hose but I could see where, relative to accessing and fighting with the lower hose, that could be a good investment of time, esp if you want to drain and flush a few times. The lower hose and clamp is a pain to reach b/c of everything above it and the intercooler hose can be a bugger to get off and on. The cobra pipe, PS, turbo plumbing can all get in the way.
I replaced my rad a year or two ago and bought some extra drain plugs in hopes of using the plug to drain it next time, IF I could commit to draining the system from there as a maintenance item every couple years and replacing it with a new one before the old plug plastic gets too brittle.
FWIW, I also invested in a 42 x 42 x 4-3/4 flexible PVC utility tray to place under the car to catch the inevitable drips or spills. Comes in handy for coolant and PS fluid work and catches stuff that runs down the subframe before dripping.
