Ah, I had a Jetta in the past (2010 Jetta TDI) and it drove great, very much like a Saab! But it had many electrical problems since new, and at around 60K and I wanted something bigger and more comfortable for my previously very long commute, so I traded it in for a 2013 Passat TDI. The Passat was quieter and more comfortable, for sure, but the handling was abysmal (it was floaty, like an old Buick) and it too, was starting to have electrical problems so I traded that in as well. Plus the whole Dieselgate fiasco unfolded soon after, so I would have gone for the buyback anyway.
I've had Hondas in the past too (1994 Civic, 1999 Accord) and they were both flawless. I recently checked on the vehicle history of the Accord, and it has been living in North Carolina since I returned it (it was leased), and has 375,000 miles on it now, wow!
So between VW and Honda, I would most definitely recommend Honda. The best used car I ever bought was a "CPO" (off-lease) 2006 Acura MDX (twin of the Honda Pilot), we still have it, it's now my wife's, and my wife doesn't want to drive anything else. It's needed nothing but routine maintenance and replacement of wear items, and the car is very easy to work on. We will likely keep it forever.
