1995 900S Clutch Cable Posted by Roger_S [Email] (#2723) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Roger_S) on Mon, 6 Feb 2023 13:03:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When my original automatic adjusting clutch cable broke four years ago, I replaced it with a NAPA adjustable one. No adjustment was required when I installed it. All was good up to a couple of days ago when I realized that I had to consciously mash the clutch pedal to the floor to shift gears, especially when wearing western boots with 1-1/2” heels. I discovered about 3/16” slack in the cable at the clutch lever end. So I thought a little adjustment was in order. Having had no previous experience with such cables, I shortened the distance between adjustment nuts, discovering that I had made the cable slack even greater. After correctly adjusting the nut to the opposite extreme for maximum distance between the adjustment nuts, I found that I now had about ¾” slack at the lever end! I checked to make sure the cable had not come loose from the clutch pedal and was correctly passed through the slotted hole on the transmission. I also tried placing/removing the cable in the bracket on the car body (I understand it should only be used for auto-adjust cables).
How is it possible that I made the problem even worse (3/16” gap to 3/4”)? It seems that either the clutch lever slipped in the release fork when I disconnected the cable (which should not have been necessary), the cable sheath shrank, or the cable stretched. None of these seem likely to me!
Can anybody (SWEDECAR?) suggest another explanation?
