Hello,
So yes it has 4 shafts. And yes 1 and 2 share a shaft, 3 and 4 share a shaft, and reverse and 5th each have there own shaft. 5th gear can be inspected by removing the cover on the end of the transmission. This can be done in the car but you can only access the fork and the parts for 5th gear. Taking anything apart in the car does run the risk of having the shaft overextend and pull out of the bracket that holds the shift rods and then the detent balls and springs escape into the transmission. But you can inspect the operating sleeve, gear and synchro with a mirror to see if anything looks out of place.
Anything further leads to rebuilding the gearbox. The problem is 2 bearings on the end of the input and output shafts are damaged seperating the case. Saab has some pretty unique tools todo this without damaging 5th gear. The real problem in putting it back together is the crush sleeve on the output shaft. This means you have to set bearing preload and end play of the shafts when putting it together.
As far as reverse it often needs replaced. I usually find that the synchro and operating sleeve are at minimum worn and often the gear is damaged as well. Good Luck, Bernie
