Rust at rear suspension upper mounts

Hi everyone,
My mechanic recently identified a major, potentially fatal issue with my 2000 9-3 Viggen. He noticed that the rear of the car was drooping a bit. When he put it on the left for inspection, he discovered that there was major body rust where the rear suspension mounts to the body. He said that the rear springs are stressing the body and that the springs would eventually poke through the body.
I've found one post from about 12 years ago where a SAABnet member identified this issue. Has anyone encountered this or a similar issue on an OG 9-3? More important, has anyone been able to resolve this issue? Currently, it appears that a body shop would have to cut out the rusted areas, fabricate new rear suspension mounting points, and weld them into the car. In other words, the issue could mean the end of the car.
Regards,
