1997 900s 2.3 manual. 249K miles
last week i noticed my ignition key was beginning to give me a problem turning. a few jiggles and it finally allowed me to turn to start.
However it happened several times and now taking a long period of time before i finally it the "g" spot and it then turns.
I tried lubing with some graphite powder and working it in. No luck.
Then tried wd-40 and shot it up good. no luck.
Then tried Deoxit5 no luck. The next day I used my air tool small nozzle to blow it all out.
Next day spent another 20-30 minutes jiggling the key until it finally turned.
Having read a number of posts here about this problem i left the key turned to 12 oclock (straight at the dash) and then disconnected my battery ( prevent drainage) as I dont know how long it will be til i solve this problem and i want the car to start if I gotta take it someplace for a fix.. I had read something about it needing to be turned to the dash to remove the lock cylinder.
Its hard to find new cyl. but i found one with keys $$$. Having read all these posts, What I dont know now is if my issue is the perhaps worn out cylinder or is it the electric switch box located under the cylinder housing. I see posts about drilling the cyl housing rear to release a cylinder tab. but i dont know how or where. Also dont know if the "electric switch box" under the tube-ish looking cylinder housing is the real problem and if that too needs to be replaced. That component is available around several places ($70-250)
Also if there's drilling into the surrounding cylinder housing, does one need a new tube looking cyl housing. Also expensive.
I read her that you make a small "L" tool to pull out the lock cylnder. I think in the key to dash position. But its all kinda confusing.
Some guidance here is very appreciated. There no saab indy within 250 miles of here and most local mechanics wont touch a saab. locksmith doesnt do cars either. So i feel on my own on this
