This sounds very expensive, parts and labor.
The sender is probably at fault. If you were able to access it's connector at the tank, and remove it, you could then put a 300 ohm resistor across it. If the guage then went near full, and the light went out, you would know that the sender is bad, and instrument panel is ok.
Did you ever run out of fuel?
There are two electrical connectors. Perhaps these can be accessed from the front side of the tank, without removing it.
The pump gets power on a black green wire and grounds via black to a ground point in the trunk near one of the lights. The sender is connected via a yellow/white and a grey/white wire.
It seems very odd that your fuse blew and this probem arose. There should not be any common electical elements, not even a common ground if the docs are accurate. But check out the fuel pump ground wire anyways. You might be able to access and cut into these wires somewhere at the trunk for diagnostic purposes. I would want to do tests to determine if the guage in the instrument panel was bad, or the pump/sender unit, before ordering parts and taking things apart.
Perhaps these wires are pinched or damaged, causing the intermittent short and bad guage readings.
