Re-glueing headlining

I need to replace the headlining on my 1988 900 2-door model. What is the best method of achieving this, do I remove the headling material in the car and replace with the new material or do I remove the complete foam backing from the car as well and replace the headlining and put it all back?
I'm just thinking that if I replace the headlining material whilst still in the car using spray glue then the fumes and glue will get everywhere!
If I do have to remove the complete foam backing as well how do I do this, is it glued into place?
Thanks,
Richard
