Welcome to the club! I have a 1999 9-3 and my temp control knob cracked and fell off too. In fact that happened twice. The second time my dealer replaced both knobs and the housing holds the knobs. He said that he greased and 'realigned' the cable too. This problem is so common that Saab has issued a service bulletin to help the dealers handle it.

If I were you I would try to get this covered by my dealer even if you are out of the official warranty. Contact Saab USA if you have to. Saab has a terrible design here. They are trying to deal with it, but are keeping it quiet.

BTW this was the subject of quite a bit of discussion on this BB a few months back.
