It half helps. The gearbox itself just doesn't like hard shifting, no matter what you fill it with or what you do to it. But it does take away the mushy, imprecise feeling, partly because it's a new part (vs. old, aged one) and partly because the design seems to introduce less slack. You still have rude fights with the synchos, especially on those 5500 RPM 1-2 shifts.
The linkage replaces the part that goes between the shaft coming out of the firewall and the one going into the gearbox. It's a different design...it's actually the linkage from a 1998 and later mechanism. The old one was supported by an arm that comes out of the transmission. In that arm is the bushing people have problems with, plus the whole thing just ages.
The new one is supported by a stud that replaces one of the axle seal bolts, so part of the retrofit is to actually saw off the old arm, which is the hard part of the job. I didn't take anything else out of the engine. You need to ask for the actual kit, because you have to get the stud. It was $199 at Zumbach, might check the sponsors. It took me two rather aggravating hours to do it, and I did it more for the relaibility -- I was breaking the bushing twice a month and couldn't stand it.
Dunno of a short shift kit. Anyone know?
