My ’94 V6 with 115,000 miles has lately developed a low level odor, I think from the engine compartment. It is similar to the odor of a smelly diesel engine, which I at first thought was the source. Here are the details:

* Odor is like that of a diesel engine or perhaps of burning rubber or burning oil

* I’m fairly certain it is from the engine compartment. With car stationary, hood up, and engine running for awhile (from cold start up), it is faintly detectable in the engine compartment using standard olfactory detection device. It’s more obvious when pulling up to a stop light after engine has been running for awhile.

* My primary suspect is the serpentine fan belt, replaced a few months ago, but don’t know how to verify or reject this hypothesis. There is no obvious fraying or squealing.

* There are no visible fluid leaks, oil level normal.

* Car maintained to SAAB specs including timing belt, which is about 20,000 miles old

Any ideas on source or how to diagnose?
