Unfortunately, I don't thing it's possible to trim AM radios anymore-- I guess they do that themselves digitally or something.
I (and it seems everyone else that has an ng Saab) also have an AM static problem. Mine seems to be affected by grounding, how close I'm driving to telephone poles/hi-tension wires, atmospheric conditions, signal strength, and what accessories I have on. Sometimes turning on the wipers or the lights will reduce the static for a while- also, try turning off the radio for a sec. This will usually reduce it until the static begins to build progressively again. This seems to point in the direction of a ground problem. Might want to try to find a way to hook a ground wire from the antenna and/or the radio to the chassis.
