Don't feel too bad about loosing that race. I'd be surprised if you could consistantly take V8 ponycars off the light. FWD is just not meant for rapid acceleration. Plus, they have more power and tons more torque then you do. Try to suck 'em into a rolling start. Maybe you could offer to take that cute girl to dinner, just to show that you're not a sore loser. ;)
Back in the early 90's I had an '89 SHO and a couple of friends had ~'92-93 5.0 Mustangs. The SHO was 220hp/200 ft-lbs., the 5.0 was 225hp/~300ft-lbs. I'd always drop back 2-3 car lengths when we went for it off the light, but if we were rolling, or on the freeway, it was either dead even, or I'd start to pull ahead as speeds got insane. It helped that the SHO had a 7000 rpm redline and made power all the way up.
