The fact that the filter does not look clean means nothing. If you have done 10000 miles of normal driving, normal paved roads, you have nothing to worry about. Most people can clean these filters every 2 or 3 years. Many make it an annual exercise to maintain lowest pressure drops.
The filter surround conforms and molds to the air box shape. If you remove it and put it back in swapped front to back, you may induce a leak. So always put it back in the same orientation.
I have cleaned the upper air box housing and put a smear of oil on the inside. After a year swabbing with a white tissue does not show any dirt entrained in that oil smear. Also, on the back side of the filter, small beads of the red oil caught in the wire mesh are red clear and jewel like optically. No sign of dirt or cloudiness. Good enough for me.
