Stir a glass of ice water with a thermometer for several minutes then record the indicated temperature (should be about 32 F). Then insert the same thermometer into a pan of water on the stove and bring the water to a boil (should be near 212 F). Be sure you are measuring the temperature of the boiling water, not the bottom of the pan. If the two readings are not 32 and 212, plot a linear graph with x1 = observed temp of ice water, x2 = observed temp of boiling water, where y1 = 32, and y2 = 212. Extend the line below 32-degrees if your outdoor temperature is below freezing. Now compare the SID indicated temperature with your thermometer and make any necessary adjustments according to the graph that you plotted.
