The low octane fuel (87) has less resistance to "knocking" (which is the rapid burning, or exploding of the fuel) so perhaps that makes it easier to ignite, making the car easier to start, especially in cold weather. Maybe...I don't know for sure. Alcohol in gasolene may make starting even harder in the cold, as I believe it doesn't burn as readily when cold as "pure" gasolene.
