I recently received the following "technical tip" from my dealer via email. Read it carefully as it gets real "technical" in certain areas. I've also posted my response at the bottom:
Dear mark,
Here is a tech tip for your 1996 Saab 900:
Accident Prevention Tips
The leading cause of death for 18 to 24 year
olds in the United States is automobile
accidents. 75% of all crashes are attributable
to driver error or inattention.
Always drive in a safe and attentive manner;
assuming that others will make mistakes that you
will have to compensate for to ensure your own
safety.
Intersections are a common area for accidents.
If you have a green light, don't assume that you
are free to go. Before starting, quickly look in
all directions for traffic that may not be
obeying signals. Drivers often try to beat
yellow lights and end up driving straight
through red lights. There is little consolation
in knowing an accident isn't your fault when
property is damaged or someone is hurt.
Be prepared to encounter hazardous material on a
roadway. The best way to avoid items you may
find on the street is to keep a safe fallowing
distance from the car in front of you. The
California DMV handbook recommends a three
second interval between you and the car in front
of you. A three second interval means that when
the car in front of you passes a stationary
object you should be able to count three full
seconds before you pass the same object.
Remember, the more space a driver leaves between
himself and the car in front of him, the more
time he has to react.
Always be alert to unforeseeable factors such as
a tire blow out or a change in road surfaces
that can put your or another vehicle out of
control. Drive alertly and smoothly always
expecting the unexpected.
MY RESPONSE:
Dear Charles River SAAB,
Thank you so much for the technical tip. Although it has been many years since I took my drivers examination I have still operated under the same general presumptions - i.e. green means go, red means stop, accidents=bad, don't hit other cars or run over things in the road. Luckily for me my memory has not faded as much as you presumed when you sent me this "technical tip". Please continue to send these as I'd be interested in your thoughts on the use of windshield wipers during a rainstorm - i.e to use them or not. I'm sure this would arouse a significant amount of discussion. Or perhaps you could provide a "technical tip" on putting gas in one's car - i.e should you put it in or not and presume the gas fairy will always keep the car going. Another "technical tip" you could provide would be on whether to turn one's headlights on at night time or not...oops, luckily for us SAAB owners, our cars have daytime running lights turning the headlights on as soon as you start your car. Boy, those SAAB engineers sure are smart. They must have known that many people were confused by this issue. Again, thanks for the technical tip. I feel safer already.
