wacky fuel gauge

the fuel gauge on my dashboard seems to have a mind of its own. the level sometimes fluctuates 1/6 of a tank from when i shut the engine off to when i start it up again. sometimes the gauge's 'hand' will point to 1/2 on start-up, then climb close to 3/4. and when it gets close to empty, it tends to dive toward the bottom of the gauge. it's always in the ballpark as far as measuring what's in the tank (judging from how many gallons i need to fill it at different points), but it would be nice if it was dead-on.
i have a full extended warranty and could, i suppose, get it replaced. has anyone else had this problem, and is replacing the fuel gauge a big job?
thanks.
