I had to have the front upper strut bearing replaced on my 98 900 because it made a rumbling sound when turning steering wheel. There are service bulletins out on noises from the front suspension, including one (I've heard) on a weld-nut that comes loose. I've also gotten a loud "grunch" from the front and or rear suspension on real cold days (10f) for a few miles. Sounds a bit like a dry swaybar bushing. Asked dealer and he said his car did same , couldn't find a specfic cause, so tightened all rear suspension mounting bolts and noise seems to have gone away. A noise load enough to distract you sure isn't normal.
