The junk shop offered me the sid 2 for 125 and the sid 3 for 150. The down side is that I have no warranty. I was told a new one from the dealer would cost 500+. So I figure I can replace it 3 times with a used one before I lose money. Secondly, there is no guarentee that the NEW ones are built any better.
As for functionality, I have only had it for one day now but it doesn't seem all that much better. You have an additional distance to destination function, average mph, arrival time (based upon average mph and distance to destination), a speed warning alarm (why?), a digital clock in addition to the analog one, and a time alarm (why?). Really how often will you need any of these functions? The distance and arrival time seems neat but it will only be as good as the distance you program in. I only got the SID 3 because it was merely $25 more. Why not, right?
As for your line problem, that is the reason I swapped mine out. From other posts on here, it seems it is a VERY common problem.
As for appearance, it looks perfectly like the rest of the dash. No way to tell it isn't original.
As for removal, I used two 4mm screws threaded into the holes in the face of the SID. Simply pull on the screws and the SID pops out like butter. Next, remove the electrical cable from the back and insert it into the new SID. Finally, you just press the sid back into place until it snaps in. Even I could do it and save 500 plus labor. It would be intersting to see how much labor time a dealer quotes for this operation.
Good luck
