Does it work? Yes. Is it legal? Maybe. Hydrocarbon refrigerants are not legal in some states. This due to the flammable nature of these products. (Sort of like using the propane from the gas grill as a refrigerant.) I assume the "consumer protection worry warts" fear the worst in handling the product and in an accident that would damage the condenser (thereby releasing the gas). OTOH, gasoline is flammable too, so the true risk is MINIMAL assuming the product is properly handled, the A/C system has no leaks, etc. It has cooling characteristics similar to R12 (old Freon) so it cools better than the newer R134a.
I personally would not use the product in a new system that has R134a since it is inexpensive and newer systems are designed to provide adequate cooling with R134a. I would use ES12 for older cars now using R12 since R12 is becoming very expensive and use of R134a in an R12 system usually results in sub-optimal cooling. Although I have never used ES12, I plan to change my 1991 Saab to ES12 this spring. Posts on the OG900 board and elsewhere from people who have used ES12 have been positive. R12 is just TOO expensive.
