The 97's have a stiff clutch. When I say stiff I mean firm, not binding or notchy. The stiffness comes from the spring mechanism in the clutch. If it is hard to push but feels like it is binding or notchy I would expect the clutch needs replacement(maybe clutch cable??). Also, press the clutch down and listen carefully at idle, If there is any humming are buzzing sound its probably a bad throw out bearing. I would say go for a 1998 over the 97 if you can, its equiped with a hydraulic clutch that is much softer and smoother than the older design. Oh yeah, make sure you get a turbo.
