It is an easy and safe job. I have a turbo, so I can't tell you how to remove the plastic resonator body that covers the throttle body.
Once you get it exposed, then hold the throttle open and just wipe things down with a cloth with some solvent on it. Anything mild will do. There should be no need to use anything agressive or hose things down with a large amount of cleaner type sprays.
Some of the crank case vapours go thru this way, and that creates the deposits.
Open a new post after and describe what you find. Other non turbo owners may find this instructive.
