From this last description, I am wondering if you have knock. It would not require a wall to hear it.
Let the vehicle warm up, set the hand brake and get down and see if you can hear any puffing from the exhaust. You might have an exhaust leak. Check around the manifold, turb, cat and flex joint.
O2 sensors are good for over 100000 miles easy. If it is bad teh ECU would pick it up. In your model year I think that you might have two, one before and one after the cat converter.
The knock sensor on the motronic engines is located on the back of the block, below the inlet manifold. It must be properly torqued to work properly. 16 ft-lb is the spec in the hanyes manual. They suggest clean threads and contact surfaces as well. It has two wires and might have a grounded shield on it as well. Wires might be black and brown/white. If is is not loose, it is probably fine.
