Well, that's not too far off of what our saab gets.. We have an '97 900 se turbo automatic. In town, 17mpg is pretty typical. We can get as high as 20mpg, and i've seen it as low as 15 after a SID reset and aggressive in-town driving. Typical highway driving ( 75mph plus ) gets us 27mpg, though i once nursed it to 35mpg. This is with premium gas.
I consider this dissapointing. Our bmw 328i, slightly more powerful, and similar weight gets 24mpg in town, and 33mpg on normal highways drives. This is with mid-grade gas.
Though:
* the saab is an automatic vs a manual
* the saab has a greater wind profile ( it's wider and taller )
* the saab has wider, lower z-rated tires, so it has extra rolling and wind resistance
Still, the mileage should be closer. I expected more with a 2.0L 4 vs a 2.8L six. Even a big chevy impala with a 3.8L and an automatic apparently gets better. I think that the efficiencies of the small turbos are a bit overstated, and that saab needs to work their engines a bit. But there seem to be new engine technologies ( svc, scc ) to address this.
We like the car a lot, i'd just like to see the MPG bumped up a bit.
