Air intake question

I have noticed that the air intake in our '900 is in the engine compartment. This is not good, especially when the car is moving slowly, because it sucks in hot air, and "vent" gives very hot air. I think it even makes the A/C less effective than it should be.
It would make more sene to me to draw the air from away from the engine. I think the old 900's drew it from vents on the back of the car. My old saturn drew it from a duct behind the hood. of course, this always got full of water, and got moldy all the time.
I have though it would make sense to fabricate some kind of duct to draw the air from a cooler environment. Has anyone already done this?
Just free-associating.
