Slow start with auto transmission '95 900S

I recently began to have difficulty when starting from a dead stop. When the accelerator is pressed (even floored) the car rolls along slowly as if it is starting out in a higher gear. There is no real snap when attempting to merge for example. When traveling along at speed and the accelerator is stepped on the car readily downshifts and accelorates nicely (when passing for example). The car has a funky transmission switch which when the car is placed in any other mode but "D" it causes the car to go into winter mode (a higher gear) and the check engine light to illuminate. Restarting the car rectifies the problem. Any thoughts would help. Thanks guys, Stacey
