97 900 Manual Shuddering?

I have a 97 900 5 speed (48k), my first NG. Also have a 89 900 5 speed. Perhaps I'm incompetent but I'm having trouble backing out of the garage (at an angle, up a small hill) without having the car shudder. It's easy to do it smoothly with the 89 and I've been driving manuals for 20 years or so. I'm having a difficult time determining if the problem is my driving, the clutch or the engine. It seems like once it starts shuddering, even if I push the clutch in it still shudders for a few seconds (around 1800 rpm). It also seems like it happens less when the car is warm and it will happen in 1st but is much more pronounced in reverse.
I'm somewhat concerned about this because:
1) The warrantee is over in a month
2) I'm sure it can't be doing the motor mounts any good
I bought this car at the beginning of the year and it's been doing it more or less since I bought it. I took it in to the local dealer and while a tech claimed he could feel it the first time I brought it in (for tires) when I brought it in for the shudder they claimed not to be able to produce it. It seems pretty extreme to me, never saw anything like it in the 89.
Looking at the older posts, I'm wondering if this could be a cable problem? Does this model still have that problem? Other than this the car runs great.
Thanks for any tips!
Bob
