I did the suspension renewal yesterday. Took me about 9 hours (with very few breaks, including clean-up) to do the whole job: rear shocks ($37 each; tirerack), front struts ($57 each; tirerack), upper mounts ($100 each; dealer), upper bearings ($33 each; dealer), lower control arms ($205 each; dealer), copper washers and self locking nuts (15; dealer). Not cheap. I had one bad ball joint so I replaced both sides. In retrospect, I would have only replaced the one side and found a replacement boot for the other side that had worn. The first front side took a long time as it was my first time going this far into the suspension, second side was half the time. Getting the strut insert out was difficult as I couldn’t find my pipe wrench. I ended up using a pitman puller and it worked very well. My torque wrench was my arm, but I put locktite on almost everything. Baab’s tool suggestions saved me so much time! Thanks. I borrowed an excellent set of strut coil spring compressors from Autozone. The rear shocks were simple (<1 hour). Been driving over every bump I can find and the car handles like NEW! My old (original) shocks and struts were definitely shot at 80K. I had a shake in the wheel under hard, up hill, high speed, acceleration: GONE. I had a clunk in the driver side front on cold mornings: GONE. The car feels great! Still need tires (my Falkens are too loud), want to check the shift linkage, no washer fluid comes from the passenger side, need a set of snows……It seems not to end with this car; though I drive her hard and in and out of NYC all the time (very rough). 1995 SETC, MBC, Sport exhaust, K&N.

Overall, this was a very easy job, but ONLY because I had the right tools, a Haynes manual, printed suggestion from the NG BB, and the time.
