I recently figured out the same procedure to remove and fix the volume knob.
After step seven I would add the following steps (for those with a soldering iron):
7A: Remove the clip holding the two volume knob sections together and desolder the rheostat from the little circuit board
7B: Disassemble the rheostat. Notice the tiny fragile little contact "fingers"? Pry them out slightly so they make firm contact with the opposite side. (This is a 3 out of 5 difficulty).
7C: Solder the rheostat back onto the board and attach the clip holding it to the other section.
Continue with step 8.
Alternatively, if your volume knob is all screwed up (or you screwed it up in sections 7A, B, & C) you can order a new one from Clarion. Dunno how much it costs, and I misplaced the contact information for them (if you search this board it'll turn up).
Don't be afraid to learn how to fix electronics... It'll save you a TON of money in the longrun!! I'm scared to know how much a whole new radio costs...
