Emergency/Parking Brake Problem

I finally removed the rotor per earlier posts. Once inside, I found that one of the E-brake pads lost the lateral spring retainer. It is a post/sprinig/retainer extending straight at you perpendicular to the brake pad. The spring takes like 20 lbs to compress. The post looks like a nail with a crimped end. The cap fits over the spring and has a slot that receives the post end. Any thoughts on installing? Alldata mentioned a special tool any experience with this tool (89-95-607)? How does it work? Any DIY alternatives?
Thanks
