The lifespan of the K&N is only longer b/c you clean it every 10K miles with the special solvent and reoil it after it dries. Remember, K&N's filter element catches almost nothing...they rely on the oil to catch most of the dust/dirt. I agree that any engine (with todays emission's laws) could stand to breathe better. I just don't know if it should be at the cost of increased wear b/c of an increase of particulate matter floating around in the engine. I run a K&N in my Porsche 911 track car...but with the hard usage it gets I plan on rebuilding that once every 2-4 years anyhow.
Just a friendly argument. Use what you want.
