Anybody has experience removing the alternator?
I've been fighting with the upper bolt fixation for the last two hours and I can't get this thing out.
I'm following the Haynes manual instructions, and they seems simple enough: remove the air box, the serpentine belt, the right wheel, the plastic shield behind the wheel and you have access to both bolts.
The lower bolt is easy, it just sits here waiting for the matching allen bit.
But the upper bolt is in a recess, behind the lower idle pulley (the infamous one in two parts which is used as the tensioner). I tried to move the tensionner to the end of its range, but the pulley is still in my way. None of my allen tools fits in there.
So then I tried to get this freaking idle pulley out so I can access the upper bolt. Well, I don't have a torx bit that can enter the space between the car body and the idler pulley.
So now to the questions:
- If you changed your tensionner idle pulley, how did you remove/reinstall it? What kind of tool can fit in there?
- If you removed the alternator from your car, how did you gain access to the upper bolt? What kind of tool did you use in there?
I have some pictures if you are interested. The first one shows the alternator and the lower bolt (picture from the wheel arch, the line in front is the brake line), the second show the upper bolt and I'm pointing to the recess where the upper bolt is with a screwdriver. You can see the underside of the pulley on the left of the screwdriver blade (picture from under the car). Finally the last picture shows the complete lack of clearance to put a torx bit in the idler pulley fixation.
