Distributor cap and rotor question

Hi. I have a 97 900S. Last week I wanted to replace my distributor cap and rotor, but I couldn't get the rotor off. It didn't appear to have any screws, clips, etc. holding it on. I asked the part's dept guy at the dealership about this, and he said the the rotors were glued on, and are a pain-in-the-ass to remove. I was wondering how difficult this is for a novice like myself, (my luck, i'd really screw something up trying to remove it). Does the new one need to be glued on also? I went ahead and replaced the distributor cap, but I usually like to do both the cap and the rotor at the same time. I was also wondering when these should be replaced (I'm at 47K miles). Thanks for the input, Mike.
