It's interesting what you (erroneously) conclude about people by their messages.
Far from being a snob, I am, and always have been, a GM supporter. I recently purchased a new Impala as a family car because of its value and performance (It now sits next to my beloved '96 900SE). My first car was a '67 Camaro 327. In between I've had many cars, but mostly Chevys & used Saabs.
It just that I am acutely aware of GM's history of "badge engineering" (remember the Cadilac Cimmaron?) and see some unfortunate potential signs of it in the new 9-3. GM's better cars tend to be ones that are 1 or 2 division platforms (Olds Aurora, Chevy Corvette, several different generation of F-bodies, etc.) and not the widely shared ones (J-bodies, B-bodies, etc.).
Platforms can only be changed so much. It is well know that the A4 & Passat are a common platform (as VW dealers will tell you until your ears bleed), but the Chevy Malibu is dollar-wise more like a Jetta, not a Passat. I doubt the current S4 would be as good as it is if it shared a platform with the Jetta.
I was hoping for a new 9-3 that could be competitive with the A4/S4 and 3-series (including, for example, rear wheel drive and/or 4wd). Now my hope is that GM & Saab keep the price low and put in some serious horsepower (see: WRX).
Maybe the new 9-3 will be (or at least enable) the Malibu SS I was hoping for a couple of years back...
