As retirement closes in it is time to replace my 1996 900S (NA) that has 158,000 kilometers (about 98,000 miles) on it. It is a manual and I really like manual shifting BUT there is a local dealer with basically the car we like (a base 1999 9-3 with 60,000kms - 40,000miles, mid $C20s price) with a sunroof and an automatic transmission. I have searched this board and have found no real "stay away from the automatic" notes such as those found on the Classic Saab board related to the early automatics. My question is, are the 1999 versions of the automatic all new transmissions or are they just a current version of the 'old' style trany? If the 1999 transmission is reasonably problem free how do I keep it that way? Trany fluid change/flush at every how many kilometers (or miles)? Does draining the transmission, filling it, driving for x kilometers and repeating 2 or 3 times (like many posts indicate) really add to the life of the trany? What about a filter change, is that a DIY? (probably messy but why not DIY??) Any 'horror' stories about the auto box that could persuade me not to seriously look at this car?? BTW we still will have our 1987 TC for my manual shifting needs - see you at Carlisle.
