Mine had/has the same problem. At times on very hot days, even with the coolant temp at mid level (car not overheating), the compressor would shut down. I posted the question and got all sorts of speculative answers (which is understandable).
Some of the theories seemed unlikely, such as the evaporator freezing and triggering the safety switch. That would never take place on a 100F and 30% (low humidity day in Los-Angeles) with cabin temp at around 80f.
I should know, I used to do aircraft wing ice formation and anti-icing analysis at an aerospace company.
System shut down with hi ambient temps would point to the following:
A high pressure in the system or
B. hi temp at the compressor.
here are some reasons why the clutch/compressor is shuting down.
1. If your system is over-charged with R134a (more than 1.6 pounds) high ambient temperatures would raise the pressure on the hi-side of your system and cause a hi-pressure switch shut down on very hot days.
2. If your system is over-charged with R134a then the compressor would be overloaded, get hot and cause the temp sensor imbedded in the compressor (part# 4632014 A/C comp thermostatic switch by Seiko Seiki) to kick in and shut the compressor clutch
3. Your system is charged perfectly and the compressor thermal switch is defective causing a premature shut down.
In my opinion this is very likely.
4. Your system is charged perfectly and the hi-pressure sensing switch is defective causing a premature shut down. In my opinion this one a bit less likely.
Just my experiences and opinions and wait for some of the regulars on the board (there are lot of smart guys here) to post their 2 cents.
Good luck.
