What you guys think of this Diagnostic problem…

1995 900 SE V6 –

I’ve been keeping tabs on this problem for a while, but I can’t pinpoint the problem. Maybe you guys could provide some tips…

Car runs fine normal. When AC kicks in, there’s this rattling sound coming from the front end. It does not happen all the time. I noticed that occurs when the compressor kicks in it. So it must be the compressor… well, checked it and noise does not appear to be the compressor. It seems like it is somewhere around the serpentine belt area.

Went on to town this week, and I noticed this. The AC was on, I want to make sure all windows were closed, so I pulled on all 4 windows switches at the same time. When the all the window fully closed, and I am still pulling on all 4 switches, all the cabin lights dimmed for a micro-second (like a flash) and the noise got a bit louder. I try it again and same thing…

Occurs when:
- In drive or neutral, at the stoplight.
- Lately, up to 20 mph, but not as bad as standstill
- AC compressor is on
- Gets a bit worse when I keep the window switches up when all my windows are shut, with AC on.
- Can't seem to make it happen in park. even with AC kicking.

So here’s what I am thinking, it may be the alternator bearings are bad causing it to spin out of whack, cause the vibrations. And the problem gets worse when it cannot generate enough juice, working overtime.

Questions:
1. How do I remove the serpentine belt so I can check that general area?
2. How can I check the Alternator? Besides bringing it to my mechanic.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated…
Thanks
