breaking automatically require alternator replacement? Did the alternator bearings go bad and cause the belt to break? If so, the bearings should have been making all kinds of noise well before they failed. If your alternator really is bad, you can buy a rebuild with lifetime warranty from Advance Auto Parts for around $200 and the belt is <$30. Alternator installation is a pain, so if you are not mechanically inclined you should buy the alternator and have an independant garage do the install. This should only be +/- two hour hours for a Pro and save you at least $100, if not more. Belt install is <30 minutes so belt only should be $70 or less including the part.
