front brake pad and rotors

I replaced the rear brake pads last november, and now it's time for the fronts. I got the pads and the tools so I'm just about ready.... only one question.
How do I know if the rotors need attention or replacement?
I did a search and found Dean's instruction (all 14 steps -- GREAT !!) from Oct 4, 2001..... and another post stating:
"So how do you know the rotor thickness without removal to measure? The wear lip at the outside edge is a good indicator. Absolute thickness is one issue, flatness is another."
Based on this comment, how much of a wear lip is acceptable.
I guess I need to know if I'll need rotor work (i.e., take the car in to get it done since I only have one vehicle and can't take rotors off and bring them in), or if can just replace the pads and be on my way.
When I did the rears, I didn't even think about the rotors. The pads did squeak a little after a few weeks, but it turned out to only be temporary.
Appreciate all feedback..
Thanks,
Ed R
