Here is a link to whats going on with new Diesel engines with VW in europe.
The fuel injectors will go up to 30,000psi from 19,000psi. That is not a typo. There are some pictures of VTN turbos showing the variable vane turbine trim.
When ULSD desiel fuel becomes available, these engines will be available here (US & Canada. A 150HP desiel will be a very fast vehicle. The 6 cylinder W engines (like the VR6) will be monsters! Real power, great mpg's, and fuel that costs a lot less than premium gasoline.
Something that might not be obvious to those with turbo spark ignition engines, when at highway speeds, the turbo is producing boost pressures all of the time. So an intercooler has no heat sink capacity as it will be mostly heat soaked most of the time. So an intercooler needs to be sized for continous operation, not for transient operation where the heat simk capacity is part of the outcome.
Note that VWAG spec's lube oil for these engines that is not satisfied by most group III diesel oils. Note that the new big rig diesel engines are migrating to exhaust gas recirculation to reduce smoke and NOX emissions. With computer controled injectors, oxidation cat technology will greatly reduce soot and, combined with the turbo will product quieter operation. Oils are now being shipped to the new CD-I spec to address the needs of these heavy duty engines. As long term analysis of the oils and wear trends in these engines progresses, the oil spec's will continue to evolve. So there are and will be some really good lube oils to support the small high speed diesels that will come in passenger vehicles in a few years.
