First time replacement of my clutch cable by myself. Not too bad, it only took me an hour. Here are couple of tricks, for what is worth.
Remove the battery and the fuse box.
After removing the kick panel under the dash, cover the couple of sharp edged ducts with , what else, duct tape. This will prevent your arms from looking like a cat's scratching post.
I also got one of those $1.99 curved small mirrors from pep boys and taped a piece of coat hanger wire at the end. Them I stuck the mirror above the attach point of the clutch pedal just to see what the pedal hook looked like. Then I actually crawled away from underneath the dash and stuck my right hand blindly and felt the hook and removed the cable. By now the new one can be installed just by feeling your way by kneeling by the car and sticking your right hand there.
Then I removed the cable from the u–shaped hook by the fuse box. I also realized that its easier to drop the old cable underneath the car rather than to pull it out.
To retract the clutch arm at the tranny, I hooked one of my ratchet straps ( used to tie my motorcycle in the bed of the truck), routed it over the tranny , underneath a sensor cable, and hooked it on to the rear wheel of the car. Then I slowly ratcheted the buckle and watched the clutch lever at the tranny move back. At that point I slipped the clutch cable over the lever and unreleased the ratchet at the buckle.
I had to get creative with the last part because I was working alone and didn’t have anyone pushing the lever at the tranny for me.
Also, the new cable part number is 4901724. I got an OEM from an independent place for $40.
After hearing the replacement horror stories, I was pleasantly surprised by the relative ease of my experience.
Hope this helps someone out there.
