A shock absorber and a strut both are "dampers", in that they dampen the oscillatory behavior of the springs. The difference is that MacPherson struts combine the damper with a housing, typically to provide steering control as well. It's a compromise design, one that trades off handling for compactness and ease of assembly. Some cars use struts in the rear though. Your Saab has front struts and rear shocks.
Konis come as inserts, your shop should be able to install that insert into your old strut housing. The Saab dealer here charged me $125 to install my front Konis, no alignment required. You should replace the upper strut mount at this time, to minimize the additional labor cost. If you're a DIY type person, you can install the rears yourself, no jacking required (apologies to Phil Collins).
